Having been some time since I went through First Arrival, Mask of Arcadius, and what felt like a while for Liberation Day, I felt like it was time to go back to the beginning and start a new run. Put my thoughts in order, maybe write up a nice big bundle of words about how I feel about the project I caught sight of... two years ago? Yeah, let's go with two years. Sounds about right. It was a bumpy road getting here, and while I can't remember all the details as they were fairly scarce (Or maybe I REALLY need to pay attention more), but was it all worth it?
I'll head off any long winded ramblings with this:
I think it was.
I got as much enjoyment out of it all as I did the first time around, and seeing what is to come has brought back that feeling of anticipation that I had started to forget about as the beta's drifted further and further apart, as the project started to grow bigger and better. Despite the challenges, Sunrider is still moving forward.
Now let's see about going a bit deeper into that. Something I never did much on the old forum, so let's see if I can whip up some feedback.
That's good. And is coherent. Oh dear.
Time to ramble. This'll be a loooong post if I don't use spoiler tags.
"The Strategy"
"The Story and The Galaxy"
"Character Development"
Good stories require good characters. Sunrider has good characters, so all's well on this front. Still, I feel like throwing in my two cents on at least most of them.
And i've got to start somewhere, may do well to start at the top of the chain (I'll save Kayto for later.)
Ava
Asaga
Chigara
Icari
Claude
Sola
Kryska
Cosette
Kayto
Oh, and Lynn amuses me with her grumpiness. Worth throwing out there.
And I think that just about sums up all my thoughts on Sunrider over the years. Don't think i've rambled this much text... ever. [Re]turn and 3.00 put me in a really good mood, and put Sunrider back in the front of my mind. I'm glad I backed the project. Would be nice to have a general idea and some news about it's future development, as it seems the only time I ever hear anything these days is when new content or a beta is released. It's gotten really quiet between each new thing.
Guess i'll just have to be patient, and keep my eyes open.

"The Strategy"
Strategy is something my early history with games is fairly well rooted in, and as such I enjoy a rousing romp across the chess board every now and again. Now if only I was any good...
The gameplay is good though. As it should be, considering the amount of feedback it received early on, and the efforts that resulted from said feedback. I can't make any claims to it's balance and difficulty beyond Ensign though, cause i'm a crap strategist. (I suppose my early strategy experience was more real time, not turn based.)
But I still have fun with it. I even refined my old tactic with the Phoenix. I swear if I kept a kill tally she'd have more confirmed kills than the rest of the fleet put together.
There's some good variation, clear threats, clear strategies that open up as your fleet grows, new threats from your enemies. Overall, I approve.

"The Story and The Galaxy"
I love me some stories. Most of, if not all of my favorite games are my favorite's because of their plot, narrative, writing. Usually all three.
Unfortunately this section will be difficult for me to tackle for several reasons. I don't like digging too deep into unfinished stories, and there's clearly a ways to go. I couldn't write any story i've ever thought of to save my life. And on top of that, i'm far too easily pleased to formulate any weighty criticisms, so if I did try to examine Sunrider's writing in any deep, professional manner, i'd probably just end up giving a simple Yay or Nay.
If I had to pick a single thing about the Kickstarter that sold me more than any other, it would have been the premise. One ship, kicked out the door before it's crew could pull their socks up and pet the dog. Thrust onto the galactic stage and into their first great mission. To shore up their strength, fill out the hanger, build up a fleet, and gather allies. To free Cera and it's neighbors across the Neutral Rim. Just the kind of recipe for an epic space adventure. Plenty more of it than I actually remembered, and I think the length of some of the battles was what made it seem like there was less story than there actually is.
Having said that, while the story is good, I think it was the interactions between the battles that started to thin out around the time Liberation Day first rolled out the door, save for the most recent editions. If we start getting as much interaction as we had in Mask of Arcadius again, if not more so with/between the crew in the future, I think it would go a long way to balance the amount of time spent between the words and the fighting. It would also draw out the time between all the major battles, as there are a fair number of those, and somehow it always feels like they happened rather too frequently. Hmm... I like a little down time between my pivotal battles.
And now I think about where the story has brought us. The ship destroyed, our battle healer is dead, Claude is back, but her Ryder was destroyed, and now both captain and crew have scattered. Assuming they don't get a new ship right away, I can't wait for the next installment. I want to see what antics they get up to before they get underway. What will their new ship be like? And just what sort of adventure and support will they find when they set sail again? The anticipation is already killing me.
And what of the powers that be? The Prototypes have been dealt some hefty blows but they're not out of the game yet. Never mind their plans for Humanity, They've got a lot of internal problems now as well.
The only face we had representing the Alliance (Besides Kryska) is dead, anyone competent who could have succeeded him is probably dead, and the Solar Congress is probably too far up each other's asses to produce anyone we'd like. Looks to me like the Solar Alliance has been crippled beyond repair. It'd take a proper miracle for them to come back from this.
PACT is starting to look more appealing now. Fontana has his downsides, but now that Alice has been exposed for what she was, he has the opportunity to turn things around. With the further introduction of Kuushana (conflict ahead i'm sure, but I hope my impression of her being very intelligent means there's a chance for positive interaction with her down the line), it looks like PACT is well on it's way towards cleaning up it's act, going back to the ideals that Alice did her level best to corrupt and destroy. I like what I see.
And now we seem to be looking to Ryuvia to replace what has been lost. Seems like we might be digging something out of the moon? It's gonna be tough getting a new ship, cause I really liked the Sunrider's design and versatility. Perhaps this is where we'll start to see Ryuvia reverse it's fortunes, and rediscover it's place on the galactic stage. How exciting.
And it looks like the Mining Union is going to be replaced as our provider of goods and services. Which means someone will probably be replacing Sophita as our mercantile contact. I wonder how Vaen is taking it, he must be devastated.
And with Crow Harbour now thrown into the mix and his character established, the Galaxy is becoming more and more of a mess. Which is good! It means more opportunities for adventure and excitement! Tell me it's coming soon Samu! I'm really back into a Sunrider mood! My imagination has really been lighting up the more I put my thoughts together here.

Ava
Nothing quite like a woman in command (If you can stand impractical skirts in a uniform), Ava was my favorite for a fairly long run. Despite that, I feel there isn't too much to say about her. The stern First Officer, always doing her duty, inventing new forms to burden innocent Captains with, and tearing her hair out every time rules and protocol are set aside. Or at least, she did at first. It didn't take her long to adjust to the general silliness that came with it's pilots, even cracking a smile and getting flustered ever once in a while.
Around the onset of Liberation Day, it seemed her rigid nature became a bit more reinforced as the war dragged on, retreating further into her serious nature as more and more problems and issues arose. And with recent developments, it seems she's suddenly thawed out a fair bit.
Overall, Ava's been one of the most stable and grounded members of the cast. It's nice to see her warming up a bit. Still like her a lot.

Asaga
Everyone's favorite Hero of Justice. It didn't take me long to warm up to Asaga. She was always the life of the party.
I don't think it was until she started falling out of her usually silly and cheery attitude that I started paying proper attention to her. When she she started to grow distant, then serious and angry. Perhaps even taking her royalty seriously, if only because what she really wanted was out of reach. I certainly think she's at her best when she's in a good mood and full of energy, but it seemed possible that her growing emotional state during the events leading up to the Battle for Cera might have started making her more mature.
Although, now that Chigara is physically out of the picture, seems like she's going back to her regular self. It'll be curious to see if there are any lingering affects from her time being all broody.

Chigara
Ah Chigara, the invaluable engineer. Never really liked her that much, but perhaps only because I liked her comrades more. (Well, except Claude.)
Not that there was ever really anything wrong with her either. Far from it. But like many people, the more she seemed to take the spotlight away from the others the more, i'll admit, I started to resent her growing presence. And it was all down to taste, so while others were probably far more vocal, I sat back and watched. I figured we might be in for something specific to see her touted so early on. And boy was I right! Ha!
Though I didn't think it would end up with her being killed. Probably the only way it would really happen though. And now she's swimming around the Prototypes Mindstream, where i'm sure nothing good will happen. Well, for people who like her as she was at any rate. After recent developments, I have a feeling we might be losing the old Chigara for a new one.
... If she get's restored back to normal by some sappy power of love malarky I just want it to be known that I CALLED IT!

Icari
The Assassin! The Mercenary! The Tsun!
Her first appearance made a strong first impression. It was her episode, her time in the spotlight and considering how the poll looked after, I'd say she stole the show.
I had forgotten exactly what she used to be like though. I seem to remember her being billed as the teams dedicated tsundere, but she never really displayed the tsun all that much. And I was okay with that. After her emotional induction into the Sunrider's Ryder Wing, she maintained a pretty level and confident mercenary personality. And aside from her first few arguments with Kryska, which were more heated and less friendly, the tsun only came through just often enough to remind you that she's not honest with her feelings.
Seems the further we've gone since the start of Liberation Day, all that seemed to get tossed out an airlock. It's clear that underneath the tough, cool girl attitude she was probably once very different growing up, and I can accept that with the atmosphere on the Sunrider and being in the presence of the others (keeping in mind I go the moralist way. Dunno if the Prince way changes much) that it was all going to start breaking down.
It actually wasn't that bad as far as Liberation Day is concerned. And i'll admit her route in [Re]turn was a lot of fun. But I swear I never wanted to bash my head into my desk as much as for the amount of times she uttered the "I-it's not like I like you or anything!" line. You can only have someone say that so many times within a certain time frame without it sounding horribly unnatural.
I still like Icari, but I'd hate to see her become just a tsundere. At least keep a mix of her original traits and attitude mixed in there with it, otherwise she'll just become simple. And no one wants that.

Claude
Oh dear, I'm kinda at a loss when it comes to Claude. Unlike Chigara who I simply rated lower on the positive scale, I never really liked Claude for anything beyond being the looney tits of the ship. There simply wasn't anything else too her that was apparent, and thus I never thought much of her. I knew however, that she was going to turn into something big though. I didn't know what, or how, or why, but I often suspected she was someone's spy. Beyond that I knew she would do something more than comedy relief at some point.
I was right about her being a spy! And I was right that something would happen with her. I never anticipated reality bending though. Don't know the full extent of what's available on that as i'm dragging my feet on getting to her secret [Re]turn route, and I hadn't done Sola's Route in Academy either, where she apparently shows up.
She's definitely developed outside my initial projections, i'll give her that. But is it a good development? It did bring us the basis of [Re]turn, which was good. I couldn't hazard a guess as to where she'll take us next.

Sola
The mysterious sniper from the distant past. Or so we thought.
Can't think of a whole lot to say. Sola has had a pretty stable development from introduction to present, going from reserved and mysterious to not as reserved and somewhat less mysterious. The Sunrider and it's crew have had a largely positive affect on her, and while she's still plenty reserved, she has opened up and grown closer to others (Mostly Kayto) as time goes on.
It would seem that events that will likely heavily involve her are on the horizon. I'm looking forward to that, and more of her growth in the story.

Kryska
The best looking girl on the ship! I seem to have a thing for tough women with short messy hair.
But looks don't make the best. It took me a while to warm up to our Alliance loving friend. At first she didn't really stand out, another by the books sort like Ava. Her arguments with Icari for a while were the highlights of her early time on board the Sunrider. Her getting away with trying stealing data on the ship (And Kayto subsequently giving it away), didn't help her standing.
Since then she's become a lot more vibrant. I really like how gung-ho she's become, as it's made me like her more as a character. It certainly helps that she's fostered a growing bond with the crew that has come into conflict with her Alliance allegiance. I'll be very interested to see what happens with her, seeing as Kayto and the Alliance seem to no longer be friends.
I suppose I don't have any real complaints. I've come to like her a loooot more since she's become more fleshed out. That just leaves one question: Will she have a route of her own? Poor girl had to share with Icari in [Re]turn (Fun as that was), which gives me the impression that she may fall a little out of focus as the other girls compete for influence from now, or just figure in with most of Icari's interactions exclusively. Again, as fun as those two are together, she's never really had the spotlight to herself.
And that's terrible.

Cosette
It's everyone's favorite Space pirate! Still skimping on the milk.
I'm probably not the only one who's been wondering for a long time now when, or if she will ever have a presence in the plot beyond being an aggressor. By that I mean towards Kayto and the Sunrider of course, seeing as she's like that generally. It's a question that has remained unanswered, and yet undiminished since she briefly came to my assistance before the Sunrider's destruction, and even before that, when I first became aware that it was possible for her to be killed by Asaga. And what if you captured her, but didn't repair her ryder? Would she have gone down with the ship? Would she have escaped? Would she have been picked up in an escape pod and brought to the cargo ship with the rest of the crew?
I probably like her more than I should (I guess I have a thing for angry midgets with short hair too. Or maybe it's just the short hair? Hmm...), especially considering how little she's changed since her introduction, and the possibility that she may not change. Furthermore, he possible death cast what bearing she'll have on any future events alive into doubt. Sure she helped out once, but will she ever be convinced, or have the opportunity to do anything more? It would be easy to say no, since that sounds like a lot of work for a few different possible courses history could take with her.
I don't know what's in store for her, and I find myself wracking my brain on what her presence will be like in the future more than any of the other girls. I really hope there's more in store for us who kept her alive. She's too damn angry and adorable! I want to see more of her!

Kayto
At the center of it all, our captain.
Inexperienced, but clearly cut out for command, his ability and his heart has been consistently challenged since his first command began. I think it's safe to say he's had his fair share of fantastic victories and defeats. He's not perfect, he has his flaws. Flaws which have been exploited, further challenging his ability to lead and command.
Hard for me to come up with anything more than that. He's had his ups and downs, and he may be different for others who made different choices than I had. Overall i'd say he's still pretty solid.
